About Fundamentally Awesome

We exist to be the "yes" when everything else says "no." Empowering special needs children and their families through community, education, and joy.

Our Story

Fundamentally Awesome was born during the difficult time between diagnosis and therapies—a time when families are left waiting and searching for answers.

Texas has some of the longest waitlists in the nation for special needs services. Our founder, Alicea Townsend, experienced this firsthand with her son, who has a genetic disorder and autism with accompanied language challenges.

After years on waitlists, losing coverage, and discovering that some insurance policies exclude autism altogether, she decided to take action. She learned everything she could from professionals and connected with other parents who shared invaluable knowledge that changed her family's everyday life.

This is why Fundamentally Awesome exists: to help families help each other.

We bridge the gaps left by overburdened systems. We create moments of joy in the midst of challenges. We build a community where every child—and every family—feels seen, supported, and celebrated.

Our Mission

Fundamentally Awesome is dedicated to empowering special needs children and their families with tools to improve essential skills through fun and educational events.

Create Inclusive Experiences

We design sensory-friendly events where children of all abilities can participate, play, and celebrate—just like everyone else.

Support Families

We help families navigate the challenging systems of healthcare, education, and services that often fail them.

Build Community

We connect families facing similar challenges, creating a support network of shared experiences and resources.

Why Fundamentally Awesome?

We know what you're going through. We've been there.

We know the waitlists are long

We know the therapies are expensive

We know the overstimulation is real

That's why we exist:

To be the "yes" when everything else says "no."

Join us in building a world where every child is seen, celebrated, and supported—just as they are.

Our Values

Fun First

We believe learning and growth happen best when children are having fun. Every program prioritizes joy.

Family-Centered

We serve the whole family—children, parents, siblings, and caregivers. Everyone deserves support.

Community-Driven

Our strength comes from families helping families. We listen, learn, and support each other.

Inclusive Always

Every child deserves to participate. We design events to be sensory-friendly and accessible.

Meet Our Founder

Alicea Townsend

Founder & Executive Director

"I have a son who has a genetic disorder, autism with accompanied language and other diagnoses. It was quickly realized that Texas was behind most states in the ability to help my child.

After sitting on waitlists, losing coverage, and finding out that some policies can exclude autism altogether, I decided to do something. The best way I know to help my child was to learn as much as I could on my own by asking as many questions as I could to the professionals who provide them.

I found groups of moms online who had so much helpful information that literally changed our everyday lives. There are people that can help guide us to keep our children safe, secure, and happy.

This is why I founded Fundamentally Awesome—so we can help each other make our everyday lives better for our families."

Our Board of Directors

Fundamentally Awesome is led by a dedicated team of parents, professionals, and community advocates who bring lived experience, professional expertise, and genuine passion to everything we do. Our board is built by families, for families — and every member shows up for our community because they believe that every child who needs extra care deserves to be celebrated, and every family deserves a community that truly understands their lives.

Alicea Townsend, Founder, President & Executive Director at Fundamentally Awesome

Alicea Townsend

Founder, President & Executive Director

Alicea Townsend founded Fundamentally Awesome from her own experience as a mother raising a child with a genetic disorder, autism, and medical complexities. With a background in science from her college studies and over 20 years of experience as a business owner and operator, Alicea brings a unique combination of analytical thinking, professional expertise, and deeply personal mission to everything she builds. After navigating long waitlists, insurance denials, and a system that was not designed to support families like hers, she refused to accept that her family had nowhere to turn. Her son survived medical emergencies, and that experience deepened her commitment to safety education and inclusion for every child who needs extra care. Alicea leads Fundamentally Awesome with the same passion and determination she brings to every aspect of her life as a mother, an advocate, and a community builder.

Kris Black

Chief Technology Officer

Kris Black has spent 22 years making technology do one thing well: work when people are counting on it. A self-taught full-stack engineer and the founder of Araptus, he's built and secured the digital backbone for dozens of organizations across Texas and beyond — including the site you're reading right now.

That part matters. Kris didn't arrive at Fundamentally Awesome as an outside hire. He was already the person quietly keeping our online home fast, safe, and standing. Stepping into the CTO role simply made that commitment official.

His work spans the whole stack — from the databases that hold sensitive information to the screen a tired parent navigates at midnight looking for help — building in everything from Rust to TypeScript. But what he cares about most is the part nobody sees: security, privacy, and reliability. For an organization families trust with the details of their children's lives, that isn't a feature. It's the entire job.

As CTO, Kris sets the technology direction for the mission: making help easy to find, stretching every nonprofit dollar of tech spend, and making sure the data families share with us stays theirs. He measures success by how invisible the technology is — because when it just works, the team is free to do what they do best.

A native Texan, Kris lives near Houston with his wife Elle and their four dogs. When he's not building software, he's building cars.
