Common Questions

Volunteer FAQ

Common questions about volunteering with Fundamentally Awesome

Getting Started

Do I need experience working with special needs children to volunteer?

No prior experience is required! We provide training and support for all volunteers. What matters most is your willingness to help, patience, and a caring attitude. Many of our best volunteers started with no experience and learned alongside our families.

What is the minimum time commitment for volunteers?

We're flexible! You can volunteer for a single event (typically 2-4 hours) or commit to ongoing support. Some volunteers help monthly at our recurring events like Sensory Hours, while others join us for special annual events. We appreciate any time you can give.

Is there a minimum age to volunteer?

Volunteers under 18 are welcome with a parent or guardian present. We have many family volunteer opportunities where parents and teens can serve together. For independent volunteering, we ask that volunteers be at least 18 years old.

What does the volunteer process look like?

Simply fill out our volunteer interest form, and we'll contact you about upcoming opportunities that match your interests and availability. For recurring roles, we provide a brief orientation. Background checks are required for volunteers working directly with children.

Volunteer Opportunities

What types of volunteer opportunities are available?

We have event volunteers (Sensory Hours, Birthday Club, educational workshops), professional volunteers (photography, web design, grant writing, veterinary services), administrative helpers, and community outreach volunteers. There's a role for everyone!

Can I volunteer remotely or do I need to be local?

Most of our volunteer opportunities are in-person in the Houston metro area. However, we do have some remote opportunities including social media support, grant writing, graphic design, and administrative tasks. Let us know your situation and we'll find a fit.

I have a special skill. Can I use it to help?

Absolutely! We especially need professional volunteers in photography, videography, web design, graphic design, grant writing, veterinary services, and dog grooming (for our Service Dog Program). Professional skills help us stretch our resources further.
What Our Clients Say

What Our Families Say

Real Stories from Our Community

Fundamentally Awesome means the world to my family. Coming from a small town with limited resources for the special needs community, this organization has been such a blessing. The owner has created a truly safe, supportive, and welcoming space where individuals of all ages, backgrounds, and disabilities can come together and feel valued. It's not only life-giving for our loved ones, but also for parents who need connection, encouragement, and understanding. This organization fills a gap our community deeply needed.
